Thanks to the Jurassic movies and the Jurassic Park at large, we all have a clue of what the Velociraptor is. There has been a lot that has been said about this creature but how much do you about it? What people don’t know is that there are so many differences between the Hollywood Velociraptor and the one known to paleontologists.
1. The raptor likely had feathers, or protofeathers, and not scales
Velociraptor has been depicted in the Jurassic world to have a reptile-like skin, which isn’t true. According to paleontologists, this carnivore had feathers and nothing more. This is to the fact that it has quill knobs, like that of a normal bird, in which feathers arose from. The ones in the Jurassic world are the exaggerated form of the velociraptorIt was very small
2. It was smaller than most people think
Velociraptor was a small carnivore, about the size of a chicken. It had an average weight of about 30 pounds and was it wasn’t that big. It was a small sized bird with curious features. What is displayed in Jurassic Park is not actually true. The Jurassic Park “raptor” was closer in size and appearance to the deinonychus
3. They probably didn’t hunt in packs.
Up to date, there is no evidence that has been brought up to suggest that the Velociraptor actually hunted in packs. All the research and discoveries have shown that they actually hunted alone. They could have hunted in packs to bring down the duck-billed dinosaurs. But still, there is no actual evidence.
4. Its IQ has been Exaggerated
Velociraptors have been exaggerated to have a high IQ and can even reason when they come into contact with some items. This is absolutely false, This creature’s IQ was very small according to paleontologists. It was not as clever as people claim it to be.
5. They lived in Asia
Because it has been a front page in Hollywood, most people think that the famous dinosaur might have lived in North America. This is not true. Actually, the Velociraptor lived in what is today called Mongolia region, around 70 million years ago. Even the first discovery has been named Velociraptor mongoliensis suggesting where it comes from, that is Mongolia.
6. Velociraptor wasn’t that speedy
Velociraptor is a Greek name translating to the speedy thief. It was not as fast as people suggest according to scientists. Even the Ornithomimids could have been faster than them because they could reach up to speeds of about 50 km per hour. It is possible that they could have been fast, because of the lift, but not the fastest.
7. It could have been warm-blooded
From studies carried out by scientists, they concluded that the velociraptor could have been a warm-blooded creature. This is because, most cold-blooded reptiles are not speedy and cannot chase the prey, what they do is they sit back and wait for the prey to come for them, then they strike. There is a high possibility that these small predators could have been warm-blooded just like other mammalian predators such as cheetahs and lions.
With so many facts about the velociraptor, these are the most dominant about them. Well, if you didn’t know, now you have an idea of what this creature looked like, having existed way before humans, around 70 million years ago.
