Dinosaurs are some of the most fascinating creatures to have ever existed. This is the primary reason why a lot of people are trying to understand them. There are a lot of studies that have been done to establish how dinosaurs lived and why they became extinct. Despite this there are some facts about these creatures that are only known by a few. Here are some fascinating dinosaur facts.
1. Dinosaurs Could Not Fly or Swim
Most people believe that certain types of dinosaurs could fly and swim. This is mainly because some of the most popular dinosaurs movies show them flying and swimming. But the truth is that there are no dinosaurs which have shown the ability to fly or swim. This might be a surprise to many people especially considering that most movies show these creatures flying easily.
2. There Are Certain Animals That Are Larger Than Dinosaurs
There are different dinosaur species with some being as small as a turkey while others are enormous creatures. One of the biggest species is the Argentinosaur which is the largest terrestrial animals to ever be recorded. But despite being the biggest terrestrial animals, the blue whale is the biggest animal to ever be recorded. This means that even if there are very huge dinosaurs, even the hugest is smaller than the blue whale.
3. The Bigger the Dinosaur The Smaller the Head
History has shown that the biggest dinosaurs usually have smaller heads especially considering the size of their bodies. This is explained by the fact that most of the bigger dinosaurs did not need to hunt since they were herbivores. They also did not need to fear predators consequently resulting to the fact that they required smaller brains. But the smaller ones needed to hunt and protect themselves from predators consequently explaining the big heads. Furthermore, the dinosaurs that lived in hordes had bigger heads because they needed bigger brains to effectively communicate with each other.
4. The Biggest Skull in the World Belongs To a Dinosaur
There are some species of dinosaurs which are recorded to have the biggest skulls when compared with all other land animals. These creatures are known as triceratops and their heads are so big that they seem un-proportional. The biggest skull of this particular species had a length of ten feet.
5. The Dinosaurs Extinction Had Stages
There are people who still believe that the extinction of dinosaurs happen at the same time. But the truth is that it happened over hundreds or even thousands of years. When the food started becoming scarce and the weather became unbearable there were some species that were hidden in safer places. Such species were left on earth where they existed until the resources could not sustain them anymore.
